Different Engineering Fields

Many of us at one point or another hear the term engineer thrown around.  But what exactly is an engineer? Put simply, an engineer is someone who is trained and skilled in the designing, constructing, and use of engines or machines.  With that in mind, it is of note that there are many different types of engines, and even more machines, so how many types of engineers are out there?  Let’s take a closer look at the answer to that question, and see just what are the main forms of engineering.

To begin, it must be stated that there almost 200 forms of engineering.  That is no small number.  We won’t discuss every type of engineering today, but we can at least look at some of the more popular and well known types of engineering.

Aerospace Engineers:  Aerospace engineers are responsible for the researching, and designing of spacecraft, aircraft, satellites, and even missiles.  Because of the work of these engineers, things like speedy mail service, commercial air travel, and moon travel have been made possible.

Agricultural Engineers:  These engineers try to solve the issues that involve the use of natural elements, humans, and animals.  An agricultural engineer used to focus mainly on the improvement of crops, and maintenance of health in regards to organic foods.  However, more recently their scope of work has expanded to include pollution problems, management of resources, and even machinery for growing non-traditional species of crops.

Automotive Engineers:  The name says it all.  These engineers focus on the research, design, and construction of vehicles for land, air and sea.

Chemical Engineers:  These engineers have one of the most delicate positions.  They tie together the rules of chemistry, mathematics, and physics to design and operate industrial equipment, and improve the methods used to manufacture chemical products.

Civil Engineering:  This is one of the oldest types of engineering known.  This type of engineering involves anything that has to do with the municipal and public infrastructure.  This includes but is not limited to buildings, roads, bridges, tunnels, and airports.  Railways and highways are among their responsibilities as well.  Many times it is noted that high quality water treatment facilities and and sewage treatment plants are also among their duties.

Electrical Engineering:  When it comes to the electricity we all need and use daily for our homes, vehicles and workplaces, electrical engineers are the ones we tip our hats to.  They are involved in the generation, production, application and even the distribution of electrical energy.  But that is not the only aspect.  They also contribute greatly to our television, computer technology, and telecommunications.

These few are only the tip of the iceberg in the engineering world.  As you can see the engineering field can range from an all out public service, to a private and confidential design and production. Whether dealing with cars, homes, roads, or the chemical products we all know and use engineers are there behind the scenes every step of the way. There are many different types of engineering.
